Folkloric & architectural sights
Sights of fokloric and architectural interest
Great architectural and folk interest is offered by the 25 stone bridges that survive in the area, some of whom are in very good condition. The most important are: the arched bridge of Pyli, built in 1514, the stone bridge of Gria with its elaborate carvings– located at the Mana Gorge, which is accessible to those who have mountaineering skills– and the arched bridge of Palaiokarya, with a 12-meter waterfall behind it, presenting a particularly impressive landscape.
Apart from the bridges, there are several stone mills, which, though neglected, are of particular interest because of their scarcity. Also, the stone springs, the work of craftsmen of long ago, hidden amid the fir trees, offer a good picnic destination, and are accessible either by foot or by car. Also, interesting is the “Kokkinosthefano“, a Byzantine fortress near Mount Giona.
The villages of Aspropotamos are an excellent choice for excursions. The terrain created by the river, along with the lower altitude (compared with that of Pertouli), offer varied landscape and architecture–beautiful and picturesque area for all visitors.
