Monasteries & Churches

If you are fascinated by the Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture, then you will be interested in visiting the following monasteries and churches in addition to Meteora.

The Monastery of Porta Panagia in Pyli was founded in 1283 by sebastokrator John Doukas, the son of the despot of Epirus Michael II Komnenos Doukas. It is built literally on the bank of the river, 22 km away from Pertouli. Nearby, stands the stone arched bridge of Pyli, built in 1514 by Agios Vissarion, still in an excellent condition.

The Monastery of Saint Vissarion (Dusikos), outside Pyli, was founded between 1527-1535 built on the ruins of a previous monastery. All of the iconography in the church was done by John Albanis.

The Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, founded in 1792, is just outside the village of Neraidochori.

The Monastery of the Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) at Doliana of Aspropotamos region, between the villages Doliana and Krania, is believed to have been built in the 17th century. Its church is characterized as a basilica, and is built of stone with a slate roof, and is considered due to its thirteen domes. The church is closed in the winter.

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior at Pertouli. A three-aisled basilica that was built in 1963 at the site of an older church of the same name in 1863. Its stone bell-tower was built in 1896, as it is mentioned on a wall-mounted slab.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos in the village of Agios Nikolaos, built in a basilica style, is one of the oldest religious monuments in the area. Its interior is wonderfully adorned with frescoes dating to the 18th century.
